Beyond the Honeybee: Building Native Pollinator Habitats in Eastern PA

When the word “pollinator” is mentioned, the immediate image that springs to mind for most people is the ubiquitous honeybee. You may not realize it, but most honeybees we see regularly aren't native to the United States. The most commonly encountered honeybee is the European Honeybee (Apis mellifera). While honeybees are undoubtedly agricultural powerhouses and essential to modern food production, they are not as vulnerable as our local native bee species. Honeybees are often commercially raised and are essentially managed livestock. Focusing entirely on honeybees when designing a landscape is akin to focusing entirely on chickens when trying to support local bird conservation efforts.

​In Eastern Pennsylvania, the real heavy lifters of our local ecosystems are the native pollinators. Pennsylvania is home to over 400 species of native bees, alongside countless species of butterflies, moths, flies, and beetles. Unlike the communal honeybee, the vast majority of these native insects live radically different, highly specialized lives.

​Unfortunately, standard suburban landscaping practices, characterized by expansive, chemically treated lawns and imported ornamental plants, are actively dismantling the habitats these crucial species require. By understanding the unique niches and lifecycle needs of Eastern Pennsylvania’s native pollinators, property owners can transform their yards into vital sanctuaries that sustain local biodiversity and strengthen regional food webs.


​The Secret Lives of Solitary Bees


​ The most fundamental misconception regarding native bees is how they live. When we think of bees, we often picture massive hives, thousands of workers, and a single all important queen. However, approximately 90% of Pennsylvania’s native bee species are solitary. There is no hive, no worker caste, and no honey production.

​Instead, a single female bee emerges in the spring or summer, mates, and then sets out entirely on her own to construct a nest, forage for pollen, and lay her eggs. Because they do not have a massive colony or honey stores to defend, solitary native bees are incredibly docile. Species such as Mason bees (Osmia), Leafcutter bees (Megachile), and Mining bees (Andrena) very rarely sting, making them exceptionally safe to encourage around homes and families.

​Their solitary nature, however, makes them highly vulnerable to habitat loss. They do not travel the vast distances that honeybees do; a tiny sweat bee might spend its entire life within a few hundred yards of where it hatched. Therefore, if a suburban yard lacks the specific nesting sites and forage they require, that area becomes a dead zone for native bee populations.


​Building Native Pollinator Habitats: Soil and Stems as Nurseries

​To support native pollinators, we must rethink how we manage the physical structure of our gardens. We often focus heavily on bloom times and food sources for bees when deciding what plants to buy, but native bees need a place to raise their young just as desperately as they need nectar. When choosing plants, we must also think how to build native pollinator habitats.


​1. Ground-Nesting Bees and Bare Soil

Roughly 70% of solitary native bees nest directly underground. The female excavates a tiny tunnel, sometimes no wider than a pencil, where she provisions individual chambers with a mixture of pollen and nectar (called "bee bread") before laying an egg.

​These ground-nesting species, such as the industrious Mining bees, face a significant obstacle in modern landscapes: thick layers of dyed hardwood mulch and dense turfgrass. Bees cannot dig through two inches of heavy mulch. To support these vital pollinators, property owners should intentionally leave patches of bare, well-draining soil undisturbed in their garden beds. Sunny, slightly sloped areas are particularly attractive to ground-nesting bees. By simply skipping the mulch in a few hidden corners of your yard, you provide crucial real estate for the next generation of pollinators.


​2. Cavity-Nesting Bees and Hollow Stems

​The remaining 30% of solitary bees nest in preexisting cavities. In a natural ecosystem, this means they utilize hollow or pithy plant stems and holes left in dead wood by beetles.

​This is where the traditional "fall cleanup" becomes an ecological disaster. When homeowners aggressively cut down all their perennial plant stalks in November, they are often unknowingly throwing away hundreds of overwintering native bee pupae. Species like the Small Carpenter bee (Ceratina) and various Mason bees rely on the stems of native plants like Joe-Pye Weed (Eutrochium), Elderberry (Sambucus), and Coneflowers (Echinacea).

​Sustainable landscaping dictates a "lazy" approach to fall maintenance. Leave the stalks standing through the winter. In the spring, instead of cutting them to the ground, trim the stalks to varying heights (between 8 and 24 inches). The bees will utilize these newly exposed hollow tubes for their spring nests, and the new flush of summer foliage will quickly hide the old stalks from view.


​The Importance of Specialist Forage


​While many pollinators are generalists, meaning they will gather nectar and pollen from a wide variety of flowers, a significant portion of Pennsylvania's native bees are "specialists."

​These specialist bees have evolved over millennia alongside specific native plants. Their emergence from hibernation is timed perfectly with the bloom time of their host plant, and they rely exclusively on the pollen of that specific plant genus to feed their young. If the host plant is removed from the landscape, the specialist bee goes locally extinct. You cannot replace a native host plant with a non-native ornamental, like a Japanese Spirea or a Crape Myrtle, and expect the specialist bees to adapt; their digestive systems and life cycles simply cannot process the foreign pollen.


​1. Early Spring Anchors: Willows and Dogwoods

​For early-emerging specialist bees, native trees and shrubs are the most critical food source in the landscape. While early spring wildflowers are beautiful, they do not offer the sheer volume of pollen required to jumpstart pollinator populations.

​Native Willows, such as the Pussy Willow (Salix discolor), are absolute keystone species. Their early catkins provide massive amounts of pollen that support over a dozen species of specialist mining bees. Similarly, native Dogwoods (Cornus spp.) are essential. When you plant a native dogwood instead of an imported Kousa dogwood, you are directly supporting specific species like the Short-haired Dogwood Mining Bee (Andrena integra).


​2. The Late Summer Specialists: Asters and Goldenrods

​As summer transitions into fall, the survival of many late-season pollinators depends on a very specific group of plants: the Asteraceae family. ​Goldenrods (Solidago spp.) and native Asters (such as Symphyotrichum novae-angliae, the New England Aster) are arguably the most important herbaceous plants you can include in an Eastern PA landscape. They support a massive array of specialist bees, including several Andrena and Colletes species that rely entirely on their pollen. Furthermore, these plants provide the critical, high-energy nectar necessary to fuel the epic migration of the Monarch butterfly as it passes through Pennsylvania on its way to Mexico.

Designing for the "Buzz Pollinators"

​Supporting native bees also has direct, tangible benefits for the property owner, particularly for those who maintain vegetable gardens. Certain native species, most notably our native Bumblebees (Bombus spp.), possess a unique capability that the honeybee lacks: "buzz pollination" (sonication).

​Many important food crops commonly planted in home gardens, including tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and blueberries, hold their pollen tightly within the flower's anthers. A honeybee cannot easily access this pollen. A bumblebee, however, will grab the flower with its jaws and aggressively vibrate its flight muscles without moving its wings. This vibration hits a specific frequency that shakes the pollen loose, allowing the bee to collect it and effectively pollinate the crop.

​To encourage bumblebees to stick around your vegetable garden, you must provide them with continuous, native forage throughout the entire growing season, beyond the limited bloom time of your vegetables. Planting resilient native perennials like Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), Blue Wild Indigo (Baptisia australis), and Dense Blazing Star (Liatris spicata) ensures that these powerful pollinators have a reliable food source, keeping them on your property to perform the vital buzz pollination your garden relies upon.


​Moving Beyond the Green Carpet


​Conserving Eastern Pennsylvania’s native pollinators requires a fundamental shift in our aesthetic preferences and maintenance habits. It means recognizing that a pristine, chemically treated lawn is a biological void, and that true landscape beauty is found in ecological function.

​By simply rethinking our approach to soil, leaving stems standing through the winter, and intentionally selecting native host plants like Goldenrod and Dogwood, we can invite the complex, fascinating world of native pollinators back into our daily lives. You do not need acres of land to make a difference; a single, thoughtfully designed native garden bed can serve as a vital steppingstone in repairing the fractured ecosystems of our suburban landscapes.
